Bio/Research

Dr. Gerda Cammaer is a filmmaker, scholar, educator, and curator. Her main research interests are experimental and documentary film, smartphone filmmaking and microcinema, overlooked film histories, the history of film technology and new media technologies. Her own creative work entails essay films, found-footage films, collage works, abstract pieces and poetic documentaries. Her films have been presented at various academic conferences, shown in galleries and at film festivals in Canada and abroad. She is the co-founder and organizer of the Moving_Image_Arts International Short film festival in the School of Image Arts at Toronto Metropolitan University. She is also actively involved in CILECT (the International Organization of Cinema, Audiovisual and Media Schools) and MINA (Mobile Innovation Network and Association). Among other publications, she is the co-editor of Cinephemera: Archives, Ephemeral Cinema, and New Screen Histories in Canada (McGill University Press, 2014) and of Critical Distance in Documentary Media (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018).
