Michael F Bergmann is an Associate Professor in the School of Performance at Toronto Metropolitan University's Creative School, where he teaches projection design and performance technology and leads TRiPL (Technological Research in Performance Lab). His research looks at how artificial intelligence and robotics are changing creative work, with a focus on human–AI collaboration in live performance. His doctoral research in Critical Studies in Improvisation at the University of Guelph examines post-anthropocentric performance and improvisational modes for human-AI collaboration, developed through a practice-based framework. His work asks what care, ethics, and co-creation look like when one collaborator's interiority is genuinely uncertain.
His creative practice spans projection design, performance technology, and installation, with work presented at academic conferences and artistic exhibitions in Toronto, Guelph, Kingston (CA), London (UK), Dublin (IE), Oulu (FI), Prague (CZ), and Reykjavík (IS). He is a founding member of Almost Alchemy, a member of the Associated Designers of Canada / IATSE Local ADC 659, and sits on the steering committee of TMU's Creative AI Hub, co-organizing the annual Creative AI Symposium. He holds an MFA in Design from the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale University, where he held an Eldon Elder fellowship.
