Dr. Maral Karimi, teaches at both Toronto Metropolitan University and the University of Toronto. Dr. Karimi holds a PhD from the University of Toronto, specializing in critical theory with a focus on social action and communication theories. Her research, rooted in sociological, critical-democratic, anti-racist, anti-colonial, and feminist perspectives, examines social movements in the Global South, particularly in Iran. Engaging with post-structuralist and anti-colonial frameworks, her work explores how ideologies, narratives, and cultural representations shape the marginalization of classed, gendered, and racialized groups, as well as their resistance and self-determination against hegemonic power structures.
Her first monograph, The Iranian Green Movement of 2009: Reverberating Echoes of Resistance (2018), analyzed the movement's democratic aspirations and the role of social media in activism, laying the foundation for her doctoral research. Her forthcoming book, Political Movements in the Global South: A Subaltern Perspective (NYU Press), further investigates how marginalized groups resist colonial and neoliberal ideologies through transnational movements, media, and power dynamics. Additionally, she has been commissioned by Polity Press to author a monograph on Iranian social movements and political aspirations.
Beyond academia, Dr. Karimi is a regular media commentator, contributing to outlets such as BBC World, Al Jazeera, Deutsche Welle, CBC, CTV, and Global TV. She has also provided expert consultation and served as an expert witness in various capacities.
